Hey! 👋 Paige here

Someone tell me how summer break is already over?! I'm caught somewhere between desperately craving a fall routine and cooler weather, and wishing I could freeze every lazy summer moment just a little bit longer. Bittersweet doesn't even cover it! Let's dive into how we spent our summer and what we have planned to make the school year go smoothly!

In the Wild

Every month, our family tries to make sack lunches for our local unsheltered community and it has become one of my favorite things we do together. The nonprofit we work with asks volunteers to prepare 25 lunches packed in a brown paper bag, each with a PB&J, a salty snack, and a sweet treat. We like to add a piece of fruit and some electrolyte packets in the summer months, along with a case of water. Without the electrolytes, the whole thing usually runs around $60 and the impact it makes is so worth it. Getting my daughter involved is the best part. It's such a simple, tangible way to give back and practice gratitude together, and I'd encourage anyone who's able to look into something similar in their area!

Quiet mornings on the back porch have been my not-so-guilty pleasure this summer. Whether it's a few minutes of journaling, sneaking in a few pages of my current book, or making bag charms and bracelets with my daughter, that little pocket of calm before the day kicks into gear has been the productivity hack I didn't know I needed. Highly recommend.

Back-to-school season is coming in hot, and so are the costs! New clothes, new backpacks, supplies... it adds up fast. The last thing you should have to stress about is what's going in the lunchbox. Our team put together a reel and blog post with 5 easy, budget-friendly lunch box combos that are nutritious, kid-approved, and totally wallet-friendly. Go watch the video and check out the post... your future self on Sunday meal prep day will thank you!

Recipes I’m Loving

We had a 90s summer themed birthday for my girl this year, which obviously meant one thing: Jess's Homemade Dunkaroos. SO fun to make, wildly nostalgic, and — hear me out — an absolutely elite lunchbox addition. You're welcome.

I cycle in and out of my Overnight Oats era, but right now? I'm all in. I love riffing on new flavor combinations, and I always come back to our base recipe as my starting point. My current obsession: a shot of espresso, a splash of vanilla, a few smashed dates, and a pinch of sea salt. It tastes like a fancy coffee shop breakfast and takes about three minutes to throw together the night before!

How to Survive the After-School Rush

(Without Hitting the Drive-Through)

1. The slow cooker is your best friend on activity nights.

If we have cross country or any after-school commitment, I try to make sure something is already cooking before we leave the house. Coming home to a meal that's ready is a game changer and removes every excuse to pull into a drive-through. Dump it in, walk out the door, come home to dinner. Done.

2. Keep a "fast dinner" shortlist on your fridge.

On my most overwhelmed nights, decision fatigue is the enemy. I keep a short list of meals I can throw together in 20 minutes or less . Things like quesadillas, fried rice, or a simple pasta, so I never have to think too hard when I'm tired and everyone is hungry.

3. Give yourself a planned "easy night."

One night a week, I give myself full permission to do breakfast for dinner, frozen pizza, or a rotisserie chicken and bagged salad. Having that built into the plan means I don't feel guilty about it, and it actually helps me stay on track the rest of the week!

Tried it. Loved it.

Yesteryear has been everywhere this summer, and honestly, the hype is deserved in my opinion. Fair warning: it's a little polarizing and it's not going to win any literary awards, but that is not the point. It was exactly the escapism I needed for a pool read and I genuinely could not put it down. Sometimes that's all a book needs to be!

One thing about my daughter: if her cheese is even a single degree warmer than ice cold, it's not happening. So when we're on the go or I'm handing her a car snack after school, these freezable snack pouches are a lifesaver. You pop the whole thing in the freezer and it keeps everything cold way longer than you'd expect. Cold cheese, happy kid, happy mom.

Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoyed my newsletter this week. I'll be back in a few weeks. Paige x

Until next time, happy cooking!
